The First Three Sins, The Summary

The First Sin, The Strings/Keys:The guitar riffs are marked by a chilling repetitiveness that conjures feelings of desolation, frequently interspersed with acoustic segments. The synthesizers craft sorrowful soundscapes, as the bass riffs subtly woven into the mix. The Second Sin, The Vocals: Involves vocals that pierce through the mix and lyrics with harsh, raspy screams. The Third Sin—The Percussions: The drumming is perfectly programmed, that oscillated between fierce blast beats and softer rhythms.

The Fourth Sin, Overall Discussion

As soon as the listener presses that play button, the opening piece, Auf meine Berge will ich Steigen, greets the listener with the serene sound of silence. Soon, accompanied by the crackling of a fire and hauntingly beautiful melodies that envelop the atmosphere and the silences.

As the listener progresses deeper into Verhinderer’s dark wilderness, the listener will encounter the second composition, Immer Winter, along with the remaining four compositions. Verhinderer seamlessly guides the listener through his ominous wilderness realm, where the dark lyrical narrative and theme delve deep into the intricate layers of alienation and nostalgia. Skilfully portraying the bittersweet contrast between treasured memories and the harsh truths of the present in well-known settings.

Heimatblick‘s musical journey unfolds over thirty minutes; the tracks vary in length: the opener lasts just over two minutes, the second and third tracks exceed five minutes, the fourth stretches beyond seven minutes, and the final piece runs for just over ten minutes. Thus creating an exhilarating, dark, seamless fusion of narrative-driven raw, unbridled black metal aggression with hauntingly melancholic melodies infused with atmospheric and folk elements that resonate with German folklore (lyrics written in German) and personal introspection. This invites listeners to explore the profound mysteries of the untamed wilderness.

After conducting some research, I discovered that all of Verhinderer‘s releases come out of the home studio of Bettler, which maintains a lo-fi production style that parallels the rough and unrefined sound of the project. This DIY style honours the retro feel of black metal while also creating a darker and in-depth relationship between musician and listener. The deliberately rough production accurately captures the musical and emotional dynamics of the music.

Verhinderer stands as a forbidden fruit of art, tempting the listener with its composition and arrangement crafted with meticulous underground precision. The one-person devilmanship behind this fruit of art release that shines through in the flawless recording that evokes a sense of raw wilderness. Drawing inspiration from bands such as Drudkh, Winterfylleth, and Saor, Verhinderer weaves together intricate musical influences into a tapestry of pure underground essence, captivating all who venture into its atmospheric soundscapes.

While the music is narrative-driven raw black metal, with atmospheric and folk elements, the listener will also find (sole member) Bettler, integrates synths and dungeon synth elements — in a way that enhances both the atmosphere and storytelling of his music. While rooted in raw black metal, Verhinderer’s sound regularly bridges into ambient, mediaeval, and dungeon synth territory — a trait that distinguishes his work within the underground scene.

The guitar riffs are marked by a chilling repetitiveness that conjures feelings of desolation, frequently interspersed with acoustic segments, influenced by folk music. The synthesizers craft vast, occasionally sorrowful soundscapes that both contrast and enhance the severity of the black metal guitar and vocals. These acoustic elements and folk-inspired tunes introduce a reflective and sombre dimension to the overall sound. Although the bass lines are subtly woven into the mix, they offer a crucial depth that enriches the atmospheric qualities of the guitar.

In Verhinderer‘s music, the drumming is perfectly programmed, showcasing the solo nature of the project. Yet, the percussion remains vibrant and engaging, oscillating between fierce blast beats and softer rhythms that beautifully complement the ambient passages. The drum programming reflects an in-depth understanding of traditional black metal techniques, enhancing the music’s authenticity. Meanwhile, Bettler‘s vocals pierce through with harsh, raspy screams that are both raw and emotive, exploring themes of despair, folklore, and personal struggle. The lyrics, predominantly in German, infuse the music with a rich sense of authenticity and cultural resonance.

Overall, for fans of atmospheric and narrative black metal, Verhinderer‘s discography is a rich exploration of thematic material drawn from folklore situated within a raw and emotive musical context.

The album ends with the last song, Heimatblick. Upon the final notes’ dissolution, one is left contemplating the sweetness and sourness of time and the space we find ourselves in. We would like to thank Verhinderer for letting us review his new album, Heimatblick. We will wrap it up by discussing the final three sins and concluding the review.

The Fifth Sin, The Memorabilia

For me, the entire journey, from beginning to end, is deeply rooted in that raw black metal sound with its DIY aesthetic. However, when a band or artist incorporates synths, particularly dungeon synth, it introduces an additional dimension, reminiscent of recordings made in the frigid depths of a forest. This enriches the artistic listening experience.

Moreover, for enthusiasts of atmospheric and story-driven black metal, Verhinderer‘s fruit of art-work and devilmanship delivers exactly what it says on the tin!

The Sixth Sin, The Artwork

The artwork, looks and feels like something straight out of folklore or dark fantasy novel. Featuring a dense, textured forest created with fine detail, using a pointillism style that gives it depth… …but draws you in.

Bettler — Everything

  1. Heimatblick is a real place; a small village I grew up in, where I spent countless hours, alone or in the company of friends. I’ve grown distant from the world of myths, occult themes, and old tales. Life itself, I’ve learned, can conjure far darker thoughts within our own minds than any story ever told. So I gathered those memories, emotions, truths, and poured them into words, melodies and sound. What emerged is a blackened mass of fear, panic, pressure, sweat, nostalgia, hunger, loneliness, adrenaline, home, senselessness, failure, self-loathing, alcohol and arrogance. Lyrically, it is painfully real. Unfiltered. Honest. Raw. The album is also about struggles mentally with the development as a human nowadays. With all its negativity and daily fights [Better]. ↩︎
